Malawi Minister welcomes CTO’s Member Action Plan for Malawi

London, 27 May 2016 – The Honourable Patricia Kaliati, Minister of Information and Civic Education, Malawi, has welcomed plans for ICT development by the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO).

I am very impressed by the plans developed by the CTO and am looking forward to working with them to take this strategy forward,” said the Honourable Kaliati.

The Honourable Minister made her remarks during a visit to the CTO’s headquarters in London, where she met with Secretary-General Shola Taylor. During the visit Mrs Kaliati was given presentations on the CTO’s Strategic Plan and the Member Action Plan developed for Malawi.

The Honourable Minister applauded CTO on developing a Cybersecurity Strategy with the Malawi Government. The Malawi Government would also appreciate the support of the CTO in cybersecurity training and projects on rural connectivity.

I was delighted to meet with Honourable Kaliati during her visit to London,” said Mr Taylor. “I outlined the CTO’s priority areas of enhanced value for membership, cybersecurity, broadband, regulation, ICT applications and Commonwealth coordination and how we will work with Malawi on these areas.

His Excellency, Mr Kena Mphonda, Malawi’s High Commissioner to the UK and Honourable Patricia Kaliati met in advance of Mr Taylor’s mission to Malawi next month where he will lead a CTO delegation working with Malawi officials on a project to develop Malawi’s national cybersecurity strategy.

The action plan for Malawi also includes other areas of collaboration around the CTO priority areas, such as assisting the Malawi telecoms regulator, MACRA, in promoting a legal and regulatory environment that is responsive to new and rapid changes in the global ICT and supporting Malawi in elaborating its National Broadband strategy.
